A good friend of mine, Gen, sent me this web comic in response to today’s seismic mishap. I think it pretty much best explains the whole situation.

Hilarious, no? I thought so, considering I found out we just has an earthquake via text message. I was riding my bicycle and didn’t feel a thing. That’s what she said.

The Toys Are Back In Town. June 22, 2010

Have you seen Toy Story 3 yet? If yes, good on you. If no, drop what you’re doing RIGHT NOW and get to your nearest megaplex. It doesn’t matter if it’s in 2D or 3D, the film packs a wallop.

I really don’t understand how Pixar does it. Their entire library of films just seem to get better as time goes on. I mean, compare the first Toy Story from 1995 to last year’s success Up. Toy Story is a fun film, filled with great voice actors, compelling story, and (then) state-of-the-art animation. Up seemed to have everything right. The acting, the story (a tad whimsical, but it is a fantasy after all), the colours, and the music. Oh, the music (who can watch the montage set to music at the beginning of Up and not tear up a little?). We’ve moved from delightful family fare, to emotionally moving feature films.

Pixar’s films just seem to get better and better, and Toy Story 3 is a perfect example of this. It definitely has the darkest plot of all the Pixar films, focusing on what happens when the time has come to let a loved one go. I really don’t want to go into any details about it, you just have to see it for yourself.

I really don’t know the point of this blog; my thoughts seem to be all over the place. I just came back from seeing it for the second time and I had to write about it. What I will say is that lately in film, there’s been something of a creative slump. We have remakes and hardly needed sequels (I guess a case could be made for this film being unnecessary, but shame on you) everywhere on our cinema screens, so when a movie comes along that really makes you stand up and take notice, you want everyone to see what you see. This is one of those films.

For the love of Andy, get off your toy box and go see this movie.

With Just One Word. June 22, 2010

Rainn Wilson (TV’s Dwight Schrute of Schrute Farms) tweeted this today. I did it, and knew it had to be shared.

The site is called OneWord. The premise is simple; the site gives you one word and you have one minute to write down what makes you think of this word. The site is meant to relieve writer’s block and help  inspire you.

I was given the word TIDE. What the hell are you supposed to write about TIDE in 60 seconds? Quite a bit I found out. I wrote:

“The tide of the beach rolled in like a bat out of hell. It was the biggest I had ever seen on the Pipeline, which is saying something. I thought to myself, “Can I do this?” I had wanted to all this time, but now that it was staring me right in the face, I wasn’t sure.”

I kinda surprised myself. It certiainly got my creative juices flowing this hazy Tuesday afternoon. Check it out! Oh, and comment on what your word was. I am a camera.

Gidday youngins’

So, I’m done. Classes finished a week ago. No more apartment to call my own. No more essays. No more required readings for classes. DONE.

Finally.

Seriously though, it feels pretty great. Lennoxville is a great little town, but there comes a time when you  must burst the bubble. Rip the band-aid off in one quick motion. It’ll be nice to visit next year!

So what’s next? I’m as clueless as Brittany Murphy in Clueless (may she rest in peace). It’s probably easier if I tell you some things I want to do. First thing on the list: Listen to records. Andrew got me this snazzy record player for my boithday. It’s wonderful. I can now put to use all of those records I’ve been collecting for years. Maybe even blog about some albums (that’s the one great thing about vinyl, you were forced to listen to every song). First record played? Rubber Soul from The Beatles. Why? I just love Norwegian Wood lately. No reason why.

Second thing on the list? Read books. I have a shit load on my summer list, and it seems more get added every day. I just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Nice read. Depressing at times, but a great little coming-of-age tale. I started The History of Love by Nicole Krauss. It’s not chick-lit, even though the title suggests it. Other stuff to read this summer: Eat, Pray, Love (actually, I have to finish this one for a book club), The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion, The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Still Alice by Lisa Genova. God, the list goes on and on.

I’ve been mulling over writing a one act play. Who knows if that will even come to fruition. If it does, I’ll post some excerpts. I want it to be set in a train car, with Abraham Lincoln, Marie Curie, and the head of John the Baptist. They’ll discuss some things. That’s all I have so far. Well that, and a line I want Honest Abe to utter at some point: “At the heart of this disgusting hamlet lies the American Dream.”

Oh, and get another job at some point.

That’s all I got to say about that (said with my best Forrest Gump impression).

Loyal readers! (All 3 of you)

I haven’t forgotten about you. It’s been a long month of Spring School, but it’s finally coming to a close.

I’ll be on again soon, and I have lots of bloggin’ ideas. There are so many things to talk about, that I know it’s going to be a good summer.

For now, be a lamb and watch this. Consider the laugh as an apology!

(At least, I hope it makes you laugh…)

Seriously. Wartime propaganda is the topic is this (very short) blog.

I’ve been taking a Canadian Cinema class in spring school. Remember how everyone always badtalks the National Film Board of Canada? How their films are horrible? Well, ladies and gentleman, I present what may be the weirdest short film I’ve ever had the privilege to see. It’s called Keep Your Mouth Shut (1944), and warns Canadians to not share secrets with opposing forces (during WWII. Duh.). Warning. This video contains the following:

Narration by the Grim Reaper, hushed tones, loud music cues, unsettling voices, and even a little bit of nazi subliminal messages. You read right, there are subliminal swastikas.

Okay, I won’t delay any longer:

Yard Sale Find! April 30, 2010

Gidday y’all!

For awhile now, I’ve been patiently building an album collection for myself. I’ve got over half of Billy Joel’s discography on LP, along with albums by bands and singers such as Heart, ABBA, Huey Lewis and the News, and soundtracks to films I’ve admired. I’ve had one problem though; there’s always been a lack of Beatles albums. I have one, given to me by my mother, which is dubbed the “Red” album, I believe.

Well sir, I went to an early yard sale today (relatives), and subsequently hit the mother-load. Five Beatles albums quickly came into my possession, each for $1.00 each. Yes, I’m well aware this all sounds like an urban legend.

Haha. Lame joke.

But seriously folks, in all the time I’ve been searching through pawn shops, yard sales, used record stores, and everything else in between, I’ve only come across one LP, which I foolishly gave away. This was my chance to redeem myself. The LP Gods wanted me to have these, I felt it. I guess you should know what I got, right? Rubber Soul, Help: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, A Hard Day’s Night: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (more on this one below), The Early Beatles, and The White Album. All for $5.00. I feel like a committed some kind of crime.

Feeling quite pleased with my purchase, I proceeded to log onto eBay the first chance I got. A Hard Day’s Night has gone for many prices, ranging from a reasonable $11.00 to an astounding $149.99. I *think* I have a first edition.

*KNOCK ON WOOD*

And I Love Her.

The serial numbers match, as do the grammatical errors on the back cover. I’m always dubious though, and this is no exception.

Even still, I feel an odd peace having Rubber Soul sitting besides The Stranger on my bookshelf. With these new additions, it brings my total LP count to an ironic 33.

I really need to get my ass in gear and get a turntable, huh?

Another ‘Scream’ Movie? Say It Ain’t So. April 30, 2010

Ever since the Scream trilogy came to a close in the year 2000, rumours began about a fourth entry. Confusing, no? Considering the final entry made it perfectly clear that the series was, and is, a trilogy. Furthering the flames of this mystical fourth entry, a film was released directly-to-video in 2001 titled Final Stab (it’s bootleg title however was Scream 4). Many were duped into downloading this, yours truly included, only to find out that it was worse then I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Rumours settled down about the sequel, until earlier this year.

Dun-dun-dun.

A friend pointed me in the direction of a news item announcing plans were moving forward with a whole new trilogy. I still balked at the idea, as I firmly believe Scream is, and was, one of the best horror films to be seen in recent memory. It single handedly resurrected the slasher genre, creating a whole slew of new teenage slasher flicks for the 90’s (this means you I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Valentine and so on). I guess my point is that I really like the Scream trilogy and didn’t want to see it get fucked up with another trilogy.

Kevin Williamson is penning the new trilogy (writer of the first two films). Wes Craven is directing again. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox-Arquette, and David Arquette are returning. Not too shabby, huh? This all bodes well. Then the teaser poster was released. I hate to say that after all of the other great news regarding the new film that a simple, and stupid, image would finally push me over the edge, and finally be excited for this movie.

Scream 4 is on the right track so far. I’ve also heard that it was written into Craven’s contract that he would not do any 3D, another good thing. Let’s focus on the story instead of the technology, otherwise the whole new trilogy might just want to make me SCREAM.

Ha. Get it? A pun? Okay.
